Lucas McCartney, who is from a farming background, received his Ph.D. in controlled environment agriculture, focusing on the development of the NVAC greenhouse and other greenhouse systems. His M.Sc. And B.Eng. are also in Bioresource Engineering. His research work is in controlled environments for plant production with the development of the NVAC greenhouse design being the focus of his doctoral work. He has led and consulted on various greenhouse construction projects in the Caribbean, Africa, and East Asia, including two commercial NVAC greenhouses which he built himself.
